Upon our dining room ceiling I hung an old apple ladder years ago fastened to the ancient joists with some cut nails and lengths of twine. And upon the rungs of the old ladder each season I hang garden herbs to dry and cast fragrance. Two months ago I hung there among the sage and thyme a white rose from Amanda’s wedding. What a wonderful day that was. I walk beneath that rose each morning, breath deeply, and smile.
